Biocius Life Sciences has completed its spin-out from BioTrove Inc. and is an independent company. It now holds all of the intellectual property and technology for the RapidFire mass spectrometry, which integrates sample preparation with mass spectrometry at a rate of up to 6s per sample. www.biocius.com
AB Sciex has been launched as a new company combining the two halves of the AB Sciex mass spectrometry joint venture into an integrated organisation. AB Sciex intends to use its new operating structure to increase speed to market in developing new solutions and expanding service and support to enable the scientific community to continue its increasing use of mass spectrometry for a broader range of applications.
Another of the acquisitions of companies involved in spectroscopy has been receiving attention from the world’s regulators. Following a ruling by the US Federal Trade Commission sale of the Applied Biosystems mass spectrometry business, jointly owned by Life Technologies and MDS Analytical Technologies, looks to be ready to be concluded. The US FTC have required the sale of MDS’s laser microdissection business to ensure competition in the North American market.
Another stumbling block has been litigation by PerkinElmer against MDS, but this has been settled before it was heard in court. MDS have indicated that they hope the sale to be completed by the end of March.
The European Commission has cleared, under the EU Merger Regulation, the proposed acquisition of Varian Inc. by Agilent Technologies Inc., both US companies, by way of purchase of shares. The decision is conditional upon the divestment of Agilent's entire micro/portable gas chromatography instrument business and Varian's entire laboratory gas chromatography, triple quadrupole gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry instrument businesses. In view of the remedies proposed, the Commission has concluded that the operation would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (EEA) or any substantial part of it.
Bruker BioSpin has installed the world’s first 1000 MHz ultra-high field NMR AVANCE™ spectrometer at the Centre de Resonance Magnétique Nucléaire à Très Hauts Champs (CRMN) in Lyon, France (a joint research unit of CNRS, Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon and Université Lyon 1). The AVANCE 1000 system incorporates a 23.5 Tesla superconducting magnet, and offers exciting research opportunities, both to the CRMN and to other French and European scientists who will access this unique facility.
Agilent Technologies has purchased the MassCode Tag technology from Eurofins MWG Operon, which includes trademarks and intellectual property including patents. Agilent will usse the MassCode Tag technology to develop new research products for pathogen identification. Eurofins MWG Operon will continue as a supplier of the core component for the new products. www.agilent.com, www.operon.com
Cerno Bioscience and Agilent Technologies will jointly market Cerno’s MassWorks calibration software to Agilent GC/MSD ChemStation users. The calibration software increases the mass accuracy of Agilent’s single quadrupole GC/MSD sufficiently to identify unknown compounds. www.agilent.com/chem/gcmschemstation, www.cernobioscience.com/products.html
