FITNIR Analyzers has launched the latest addition to its suite of process analysers. The FITNIR Kappa measures the kappa number of wood pulp, which plays a critical role in the efficiency of digester and bleaching operations. Wet pulp samples are simply washed with water and pressed into a pad, which is then analysed by the spectrometer within 20 s.
Procurement applications and final product testing is also now possible. “FITNIR Kappa is the first of its kind to directly measure kappa number on dry pulp sheets without the use of chemicals, yet can provide rapid, reliable and accurate results,” explains Thanh Trung, VP of Technology. “The data from FITNIR Kappa lends itself to process optimisation, ensuring the target product quality is reached and maintained.”
These uses are only the tip of the iceberg for this versatile technology. Applications are already available for Air Dry (AD) content, while many other possible parameters for improving product quality are in development. FITNIR Kappa represents a paradigm shift in how pulp properties measurement is done. Its simplicity reduces operator-to-operator variability, while providing faster, more accurate results for improved efficiency and profitability.

SeaWave NIR spectrometer

SeaWave NIR spectrometer
The Seawave from Radiantis is a near infrared spectrometer with no moving parts, small footprint, a data acquisition speed of >1000 spectra/second and resolution of 3 nm for a broad detection range in the IR (900–1700 nm). It is based on Hamamatsu InGaAs linear array sensors, and its small size and light weight make it suitable for integration into in-line and off-line analysers for the food and pharmaceutical industry, as well as handheld analysers for routine process testing. It features a versatile entrance aperture which incorporates both a standard fibre input connector to bring light into the device through an optical fibre and a slit which enables free space input coupling. A USB 2.0 interface connects it to a PC, and DLLs and customised control software packages for specific requirements are provided. The higher resolution (<3 nm) is achieved at the expense of shorter detection ranges; extended spectral ranges (>1700 nm) are also available upon request.

Galaxy Scientific has introduced the QuasIR 3000 portable FT-NIR spectrometer. It uses an integrating sphere for large area sampling, and the “PermAlign” optical design maintains alignment and performance under routine and extreme conditions. Other features include: Automatic Performance Testing Unit, which provides an automated validation process for routine use workflow with reduced documentation burden. A 25-mm sampling area to produce uniform sampling and more reproducible results. Optional sample spinner to further increase the sampling area, and which holds sampling cups up to 98 mm diameter. Spectral Sage software suite combines the ease-of-use needed for every day analysis with functions for advanced method developers. The instrument weighs 8.5 kg and measures 44.5 × 23 × 14 cm. The wavelength range is 785–2500 nm with a resolution of >0.78 nm at 1392 nm.
